The original plan was to use the LDR's and led's located either side of the slot as detailed below. Unfortunately the response times were not fast enough and I've resorted to a lighting gantry and infra red sensors mounted below the slots.

I'll publish the circuit diagram when time permits.

NOTE: The following did not work. Please don't try this at home!

The start line sensors are connected to the electronics using a screened cable.

The above photos show the side view of the LDR with the screened cable and the LED with the unscreened cable before insertion into the track. The second photograph shows the underside of the strip board with one break in the track at the top.

The other two photographs show all the cabling on the underside of the track and a close up shot of the sensor installed. Larger images are included to see the detail.
