1848 Will: Elizabeth Fasham (widow) of East Northdown, St Johns, Isle of Thanet
Kent made trustees her sons Stephen Fasham and James Fasham. Elizabeth
bequeathed estate in equal parts to her sons John Fasham, Stephen Fasham,
William Fasham (alias Fassam), James Fasham, George Fasham and granddaughter
Hannah Elizabeth Busbridge daughter of her late daughter Sarah late the wife of
the late Nathaniel Busbridge of St Peters Thanet. The Will was proved 28
October 1854 by the oath of surviving executor James Fasham.

16 YEARS ON FARM AND 60 AS MINER

WORTHIES STILL HARDY
Began work on a farm scaring crows for twopence a day, ploughed at
the age of twelve for threepence a day and got married when his
wage was 10 shillings a week.
This is the early record of Mr. Walter Reed, a widower of 84 who
lives at the Crookhill Aged Miners' Homes. A native of Somerset,
Mr. Reed worked 60 years in Durham coal mines.
Speaking as though he had just "coom up from Zummezet" despite the
long sojourn in the North, Mr. Reed in an interview with an
"Evening World" reporter, recalled having seen his grandmother
light the fire with the aid of steel, flint and tinder-box.
Engaged as a hewer on his first day in County Durham, Mr. Reed
filled tubs of coal during his first shift at the Hamsteels Pit.
He has always been, and still is somewhat of a mechanical genius,
and once made a threshing machine.
He has made and mended clocks all his life, and still does.
Me Reed roared with laughter at the recollection of being kicked
clean through a stable door into a well by a vicious horse when he
was quite a youngster.
Sixty years in the pits and 16 of farming, however, have had re-
markable little effect upon the old man's physique.
He has three sons, four daughters, 36 grandchildren, and 14 great
grandchildren.
