1871 census: coal miner.
25 Mar 1881 The Durham Chronicle: "Changing the tokens at Kimblesworth Colliery
- William Tinkler, coal hewer at the above colliery, was charged with
attempting to defraud Sir George Elliot, on the 15th inst., by changing the
tokens."
03 Apr 1881 census: Prisoner in Durham Prison. Although age is given as 39
(should be 41) he was born in 1839 and may have stated year of birth instead of
age. Occupation Coal Miner and place of birth Bowes agree with other evidence.
08 Apr 1881 The Durham Chronicle: "Alleged False Pretences at Kimblesworth
Colliery. William Tinkler (32), pitman, was indicted on a charge of attempting
to obtain by false pretences one shilling and fourpence in money...the [jury]
foreman, in answer to the chairman, said that they were unanimously agreed that
the prisoner was not guilty. The Chairman (to prisoner) - You have had a very
narrow escape. You can go. - A well-dressed woman in the body of the court rose
to her feet and addressed the jurymen: I am very thankful, gentlemen, that you
have found my husband, a poor hard-working, innocent man, not guilty."
