The John
Etheridge Trio
With John Etheridge -
Guitar; Pete Whittaker - organ; Mark Fletcher - drums
John Etheridge is not just another great guitarist, he is a master of the instrument and he knows how to use it to best effect in an enormous range of settings. He is fast, a great chord man, inventive but subtle, as good with a pick as finger style, as at home on acoustic as on electric guitar. Critically, he knows what to leave out, when to use nuance and suspense and when to let rip. Taste and talent are the indisputable hallmarks of this incredibly accomplished and well-rounded musician who reads, and responds to his fellow musicians and his audience equally well. - Bill Starling

Byron Wallen's Indigo
With Byron Wallen - Trumpet; Tony Kofi - Saxophones; Larry
Bartley - Bass; Tom Skinner - Drums
Byron’s
always absorbing music genuinely draws in the disparate elements of African and
Eastern cultures, while retaining true jazz spirit. Here he gets ever closer to
the source, recently becoming one of a hand-picked McCoy Tyner band performing
at the Barbican. He is also a member of the newly-resurgent Bheki Mseleku’s
sparkling new band. His front-line partner is another formidable creator; Tony’s
skills as soloist and composer can been heard on his CDs ‘Future Passed’ and the
multi-award-winning ‘All Is Know’ Monk project, and when appearing with Andrew
Hill and Sam Rivers. Larry and Tom complete the Indigo line-up with a great
breadth of experience; they have worked variously with Denys Baptiste, Ingrid
Laubrock, Christine Tobin and Stanley Turrentine. The whole team appear on the
new CD, Meeting Ground, on Byron’s own Twilight Jaguar label.

The Gareth Lockrane Septet
RISING STAR ON FLUTE DOWNBEAT CRITICS POLL 2008!
The Gareth Lockrane Septet was formed in 2005 and in
addition to Gareth on all the flutes, the band tonight features some of the
finest jazz musicians in the country - Robbie Robson (trumpet/flugelhorn), Alex
Garnett (tenor sax), Trevor Mires (trombone/euphonium), Andrew McCormack
(piano), tbc (double bass), Matt Home (drums). The band was conceived when
Gareth suddenly had a lot of time on his hands in autumn 2004 due to a wrist
injury that put him out of playing action for 3 months, so he left the flute in
the case and decided to write the material for a larger band that could allow
the improvisatory talents of the individual players to come to the fore, yet in
the context of richly scored original compositions and arrangements. Originally
inspired by a lesson with the great Walt Weiskopf (who's own nonet records on
Criss Cross are a pair of contemporary classics) and the likes of Thad Jones,
Kenny Wheeler, Bill Holman, Jim McNeely, Jimmy Heath, Herbie Hancock and many
other fine practitioners of the large/small group and band-within-a-band way of
thinking, the septet features Gareth's dynamic original compositions which draw
on influences ranging from contemporary jazz, hard bop, funk and world music.
Between them the members of the Septet have performed/recorded with Pete King,
Hans Koller, Anita Wardell, Jim Mullen, Sam Rivers, Donald Harrison, Grooveyard,
Matt Wates Sextet, Jazz Jamaica, The James Taylor Quartet,Incognito and the
Gwilym Simcock Nonet/Big Band.

In Japan, the last album, ‘Bagunca’ entered the HMV Brazilian chart at number 1 , and includes an excellent funky remix by DJ Sunaga T. The vinyl 12" from this was released in Europe on Freestyle Records... hailed as the jazz dance anthems of 2004.
