The Coat of Arms opposite are the personal Arms of The Chisholm.

Several legends deal with this. One, which is applied to various animals and shared by other clans, tells of an early Chisholm saving the life of a Scottish king who, while hunting was attacked by a furious boar.

Another story is given by James Logan and quoted in Mackenzie's History of the Chisholms. "The popular tradition is that two brothers determined to destroy a ferocious boar which kept the whole strath in constant terror, and having discovered his den, one of the men, as the animal was about to attack him, thrust his hand down its throat, and dragging out the tongue and stomach, his companion exclaimed 'Si Salaich,' meaning that he had made a filthy grasp. From this comes Si'sal, and the brothers became the armorial supporters."

I have written a number of pages describing the history of Clan Chisholm. I have relied heavily on the privately published "The Clan Chisholm" by Jean Dunlop (Hon. Clan Historian), the Family Tree of Wilfred Medlam and the letters to my father from his mother and her relations for these pages.
