Clan Chisholm History

Cadet Families

The are four Cadet families of Clan Chisholm. These are Lietre, Knockfin, Struy and Clann 'ic Ruarioth. The Chisholms who lived in the Borders and in Cromlix and Dundorne whilst being the descendents of Robert Chisholm and Anne Lauder should not be considered as cadet families because they'd never lived in the Highlands. Rather they are distinct families.

The Lietre family are the descendents of Thomas of Kinneries. The family originally lived at Kinneries in order that his wife might be able to see the property of her father, Roderick Mackenzie of Redcastle. The family later moved to Lietre in Glencannich. The building is still visible on the north side of the Glen on the road up to the Dam at Loch Mullardoch.

The Knockfin family are descendents of Colin of Knockfin.

The Struy family are decendents of Theodore of Struy.

Clann 'ic Ruarioth are the descendents of Roderick Chisholm, who fought and was wounded in the head at Culloden, and Anne Chisholm, a daughter of the chief. Their family lived at Breakachy above the Crask of Aigas. Roderick was the eldest son of Thomas Chisholm, who was the head of the Lietre family and who fought for the Stuarts at both Sheriffmuir and Culloden.
