A scrivener notary is a full-time notary public who is a member of the Worshipful Company of Scriveners of the City of London, and has qualified in accordance with the Company’s rules. The Scriveners’ Company, which is one of the oldest City livery companies, traces its origins as far back as 1373.  The Company sets the examinations for prospective scrivener notaries and prescribes the other qualifications for entry to the profession. It is one of the few livery companies which still governs a "living" profession.

The profession is a highly specialised one and has grown out of the unique position of the City of London as an international trading centre. Nearly all the work of scrivener notaries is of an international nature, although they are competent to advise on certain domestic matters as well.

Scrivener notaries are trained not only in English law, but also in relevant aspects of the law of a foreign country.  They are also examined in two foreign languages. This places them in a unique position to provide a bridge between the common law system prevalent in the English speaking world, and the civil law system found in many other parts of the world, including most countries in continental Europe and the whole of Latin America. Scrivener notaries are therefore able to certify documents in many languages and also to prepare legal documents -for example powers of attorney - in the form and language of the country in which they are to be used.

We aim to provide a personal and efficient service for our clients and to provide timely and practical solutions to clients’ problems based on a thorough understanding of their needs.

The firm of John Venn & Sons can trace its origins back to the late 18th Century, but is at the forefront in the application of information technology both in its daily work, and in developing the use of electronic signatures.

We are also official translators, and can arrange translation from or into virtually any language.

Translation

Our language training means that we can also provide translation services, especially for legal documents. A scrivener notary can also certify the accuracy of a translation and thereby render it acceptable for production before courts and other authorities in the United Kingdom and overseas

Some of the most widely spoken languages in the world are Mandarin, English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, French and Japanese. Others such as German, Italian and Dutch are commercially important. We identify more than 60 official languages and many more spoken languages. We have translated over 68 language pairings in the last year alone but even more important is our capability of matching subject-matter with a suitably qualified and expert linguist.

For the applicable language, have a look at our list of Countries of the World and their languages

Scrivener Notaries are full members of the Union Internationale du Notariat Latin (UINL) (International Union of Latin Notaries). This is significant amongst Notaries around the world, in that they are the only Notaries from a Common Law based legal system that have been recognised as having the same status as their Civil Law colleagues.
