( Edith ) Mavis Smith 1922-2003

Douglas and Mavis Smith at Goyt Valley Family group on Douglas Ian's wedding day

Mavis Smith was born on 17th December 1922 at Walsden near Todmorden and, as Edith Mavis Platt, was the younger child of William & Mary Ann Platt. She had one brother Ronald.

Her childhood years & education were spent in the Littleborough & Rochdale areas and she qualified for Grammar School.

After leaving school, she worked as a clerk for Yorkshire Electricity Board and during the Second World War, she did her share of firewatching etc.

In August 1957, she and a friend went on holiday to Jersey where she met Douglas Smith at a dance. Their first date thereafter was at the Devil's Hole and six weeks after meeting they were married and she came to live over the shop at Gloucester Road, Urmston. Nearly 3 years later they had their only child Douglas Ian Smith

After retiring, she daily spent many hours walking and exercising the dogs with Douglas Smith as well as gardening, knitting and crocheting.

She enjoyed reasonable health until nearly the end of her life when she developed congestive heart failure and was admitted to hospital in April 2002.
After treatment she returned home in May and was able to visit the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with us but in July 2002 she tripped and fell downstairs leaving her with a broken wrist and severe bruising. This time she spent 13 weeks in hospital and eventually came home in November 2002.
She did rally and celebrate her 80th birthday in December 2002 and was still mobile and chatty and enjoyed the snooker whatever hour of day or night it was shown on TV.
Her legs failed her in May 2003 and on July 3rd she was readmitted to hospital. She died mid-morning on Sunday 10th August 2003 at Ward 1 of Trafford General Hospital.
