Using Desktop Scraps

Ever heard of a “Desktop Scrap”?  It’s a useful way of holding a snippet (scrap) of information – David Dorn shows you how.

Simply put, you can paste the contents of the clipboard directly to your desktop as a “Scrap” – it doesn’t have to be pasted into an application as such. You’ll see the icon that’s created looks like this F

Be aware, though, that not all applications can create a Scrap – it’s easy to discover whether yours will, though – just try highlighting some text, or a small picture, select <Edit><Copy>, and then right click on your desktop and select <Paste>. If the Scrap is created, the application you’ve copied from conforms to the OLE standard and will create a Scrap.

You might wonder what use a Scrap has – well, they’re very handy for pasting information you use a lot but don’t want to re-type in many different applications – you could, for instance, set up your name and address, ready to be pasted into all sorts of different programs .
