Increase your desktop real-estate You can get extra pixels for your applications this way! This week’s tip is simplicity itself – but very handy for those situations where you could do with a few more pixels of space on your desktop to allow you to edit that one slightly larger than normal photo or document. Your taskbar (the grey bit that usually sits at the bottom of your screen, but which can be docked to any side of it) can be made to disappear when you’re not using it. It’s called “Auto-hiding” and making it do it is very simple: 1 – right click on the taskbar 2 – select <Properties> 3 – check the <Auto-hide> check box 4 – Click <OK> That’s it. Now, when you’re not using the taskbar it will slide out of sight, leaving only a one or two pixel wide strip showing. When you need to use it (to get at the <Start> button, for instance) just move your pointer over where it should be, and it will, as if by magic, slide right back into view! It’s as easy as that.
