Viewing Quickly (and safely)

Got a file but don’t know what application it’s been created in? Here’s what to do – and it might save you from a Virus as well.

Right click on the file – you should see a “Quick View” option. If it’s there, click on it, and you’ll be able to see what’s inside the file, as it was laid out in the original application.

If it isn’t there, there are two possibilities;

1.       the file type isn’t supported in your version of Quick View

2.       You haven’t got Quick View installed.

To test for the latter, right click on a *.txt file – you should see the Quick View entry. If it isn’t there, you’ll need to install it from your original CD using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel – it’s under the Windows Setup tab, in Accessories.

If your file type isn’t supported, then you may need to download and install the full version from www.jasc.com – you can use the try-before you buy version for a quick check on a file.

It’s worth noting, too, that, by using Quick View, you prevent any file-borne macro viruses from executing, which is a valuable by-product of the accessory.
