EGate Manual

The built-in help functions are rather brief at 160 characters, so here are some rather more detailed instructions.

Sending SMS messages to E-Gate

  1. E-Gate is reached via a gateway number. All SMS messages to be processed by E-Gate must be sent to this number. Please do not make voice calls to this number. Enquiries cannot be answered by telephone.

  2. An SMS message to E-Gate consistes of two basic components: You can use lower or upper case, or any combination, for example "MAIL", "mail" or even "mAiL" are all valid. The Command-name and each parameter are separated by a space.

  3. Description of each Service

    NameParametersFunctionNotes
h Sends a list of all available services <service> h sends a brief help message for that service.
alias [<Alias-Name> <Sequence-of-commands>] Sets an alias for a command or sequence of commands. If alias is sent without parameters, a list of all aliases is returned.
anon <E-Plus-Number> <Message> Sends the <Message> anonymously to the given <E-Plus-Number>
calc <string to be calculated> calc acts as a pocket calculator; only basic +-*/ functions are currently available. To divide, use : to represent /.
kfz <Registration-Prefix>|<-City> Translates a car <Registration-Prefix> into its related <City> and vice-versa. The pling character (|) is only required where the prefix is 1 or 2 letters long.
mail [-] <Mail-Address> <Message> Sends the <Message> to the given <Mail-Address>. The message will be placed in the subject field. If a - is placed in front of the Mail-Address no confirmation will be returned. In place of @ use *. Instead of _ use ' .
The recipient may reply to the message. Each E-Plus-Number can be e-mailed using the following address: <E-Plus-Number>@egate.artcom.de . The whole message must be in the subject line.
news [s|u] Returns a current news headline. If s is added, you are subscribed to the news service, i.e. each headline will be sent to you automatically. Use u to unsubscribe again.
offline [on|off [<Mail-Address>]] If your phone is out of use for a longer period, or you'd just rather, you can go offline. Following receipt of offline on EGate stores your SMS messages rather than sending them. They will be forwarded when you send offline off. If you quote a <Mail-Address> after the off your SMS messages will be sent to this address. In place of @ you may type * .
    send ... is explained here.

An overview of E-Gate Chat lists

tel <Telephone Number with Prefix> Returns the name and address of the customer owning the <Telephone Number with Prefix> gehören. Up to now, only the data from the Berlin Phone Book (94/95) has been available, so you can dispense with the prefix. In the future there will be other cities.
A search in the other direction (Name/Address to telephone number) is still not implemented - you'll have to phone enquiries.
unalias <alias> [<alias> [<alias> [...]]] Deletes one or more aliases set up with the alias service.
url [all] [http://]<URL> Pure madness! WWW on your handportable! Returns the first 160 characters of the given HTML page. If all is added, the HTML-Tags will also be returned. Because redirect is currently unsupported by url the exact URL must be quoted.
    In place of / type ! , " for ~ and ' for _.
wetter Returns the current Berlin weather forecast. We're working on weather reports for other cities.

  4. The response should normally arrive within 100 seconds. If E-Gate is being used heavily, it can take somewhat longer. Delays may also be experienced on the E-Plus network.

Sending and receiving mesages longer than 160 characters
(LMS [Long Message Service])

Messages longer than 160 characters (e.g a selected WWW page) will be returned in several parts. This is indicated using a "+" as the last character of the SMS message. The next message simply continues where the last left off, and so on until the complete message has been transmitted. The same method can be used to send long messages (e.g. a long mail message). If a "+" is appended to the end of an SMS, E-Gate waits for the next message. Do not repeat the service-name. E-Gate recognises the end of a long message when there is no "+" on the end. enthält.

Exchange of messages with the D2 network

Messages to D2 can currently be sent only over the mail gateway. The syntax is as follows:
mail 49172<7-digit D2 number> <message>
