Useful Phrases in Swahili
Swahili is a truly beautiful language. It still is the lingua franca of East Africa. Swahili can be heard from Somalia to Malawi, and contains many Arabic words, - reflecting the early Arab influence in the development of Kenya. Swahili developed into Kiswahili after independance and was adopted as the national language of Kenya.
Other languages used often in Kenya include Kikuyu...(Nairobi and
environs), Luo...(North of Nairobi around Lake Victoria), Wakamba...(South of
Nairobi) and Giriama...(Coastal Region)
BACK
Jambo means 'Hello'
as everyone knows and 'Karibuni' means Welcome. I have listed a few words
and some useful phrases below. I'll add to them as inspiration comes, Remember Swahili is
spelt phonetically -(pronounce it as it spells) With the right
delivery, Swahili is far more descriptive and precise than English. Watching and listening to
an animated discussion in Swahili perhaps around a camp-fire, is a truly
illuminating experience. Time is expressed slightly differently in Kenya, I think it
conforms to the Middle Eastern format. The first hour of the day is
seven AM. In Swahili, one is MOJA, and to say it is seven 'o clock in the
morning you would say 'Saa Moja ya Asubuhi'.I have listed the numbers from one to twelve below. Asubhui
means morning and Usiku means night. Thus 'Saa moja ya Usiku' means the
first hour at night or 7pm. Similarly the days of the week start with
Friday. This is known as IJUMAA. Saturday is Jumamosi - Mosi is the tense
of Moja (one) when used here, and means one day after Friday. Sunday is Jumapili
- two days after, and goes on Jumatatu(3) (Monday), Jumaene(4) (Tuesday), Jumatano(5)
(Wednesday) and Thursday is Alhamisi.

The Kenya Coast must be one of the most beutiful in the World. Despite the tourism the beaches appear deserted because they are so big, and nearly all are sand.(In UK we have pebble beaches!) Locally the Coast is divided into two, North of Mombasa and South of Mombasa - North Coast and South Coast.
Starting at the far North, we have Lamu, an island just off
the coast, where tourists can visit or stay at Peponi's, Ras Kitau, or Mahrus Hotels, or Petleys Inn on the northern coast. Travellers
will find no shortage of places to pitch a tent.
Travelling South from Lamu the next main Tourist Centre is
Malindi. Malindi was the first Trading Centre in East Africa, due mainly to its
long gradually-sloping beaches, which made it easy to load the trading Dhows
from Goa, India and the Gulf of Arabia. The beaches also provide great Surf.
Malindi is not very big, but the architecture is strongly Arab
influenced, and the population mainly Muslim, with beautiful Mosques dotted all
over.
BACK
There are many Hotels in Malindi, most of them 5 star, and all
right on the beach.Amongst others are The Sinbad and The Eden Roc. Deep Sea
Fishing, especially for Marlin, Sailfish, and the big sharks
(Mako and Hammerhead) is greatoff-shore, and can be organised with the
Malindi Deep Sea Fishing Club, or through the Hotels. Well worth a try if
you like fishing.
About 20 minutes walk South of Malindi is the Silver Sands Camping
Site, which is very comfortable and serves food.
Next place down the Coast is Turtle Bay, but before that you MUST visit Gedi Ruins, the most magical of places. I don't know who built the original settlement, but it is very old, pre-dating the Arabs, and the atmosphere I can only equate to bieng in a Cathedral. Huge lliana-clad trees dwarf the ruins and make the whole area dark and mysterious.
Turtle Bay, so-called because of the turtle-shaped
coral island in the bay (home to a huge Rock-Cod or Grouper) has 3 Hotels
Hemingways, Turtle Bay and Seafarers. Turtle Bay is a bit more quiet than
Malindi, but offers superb Snorkling and Diving. When the South Monsoon is blowing
there can be lots of seaweed on the white beach, but the Hotels rake it up, although
they can't do much about the weed in the sea.
